The Short Message Service (SMS) is the ability to send and receive
text messages to and from mobile telephones. The text can comprise
of words or numbers or an alphanumeric combination. SMS was created
as part of the GSM Phase 1 standard. Each short message is up
to 160 characters in length when Latin alphabets are used, and
70 characters in length when non-Latin alphabets such as Arabic
and Chinese are used.
There
is no doubt about the success of the Short Message Service- the
market in Europe alone has reached over one billion messages per
month despite little proactive marketing by network operators
and phone manufacturers.
Key market drivers over the next few years such as the value added
PUSH and PULL based SMS services would continue this growth path.
Other growth drivers would include mobile to machine and machine
to mobile messaging..
With enterprises and Mobile operators
launching a host of SMS based PULL and PUSH applications, a need
was felt to launch the services on a global scale using the mobile
operators infrastructure.
The
solutions available either required a tie up with all the operators
worldwide or had limited messaging capabilities. C-NET Telecom
was quick to spot the need and come up with a solution addressing
the twin problems faced by operators and Enterprises worldwide.
